‘Take a cold shower dude’ is a common saying when someone gets either angry or furious. Cold showers and cold water is something our ancestors have been living with, when water heating was not even on the sight of a human vision.

Humans are so used to this luxurious lifestyle and being content in the temperature that is comfortable for us, that we would rather take a punch than put ourselves in cold water, which tells a lot about our nervous system and ourselves too.

There are some benefits that come from cold showers and it’s something that you should consider if you want to increase the quality of your life both mentally and physically.

The beneifts

1. Speeds up muscle recovery and reduces DOMS

A study carried out in 2009, which had 17 trials involved and over 360 people who had taken cold showers after resistance training – cycling or running. The results were astonishing, 24-minute ice baths increased the muscle recovery and reduced the soreness 1-4 days after exercise, with a water temperature around 10 degrees Celsius. Some studies involved colder temperatures too, but it says a lot about the effects of cold temperature on the human body.

2. Improves immunity and blood circulation

Another benefit that comes form taking cold showers and it has been proven by Dr. Joseph Mercola that when the cold water reaches the body, its ability to get blood leads the circulation to arteries so it can pump the blood more efficiently, which results in boosting our heart health and blood circulation. According to Dr. Mercola, cold showers can also lower blood pressure, improve our immune system and clear blocked arteries, as well as provide enough circulation for our surrounding organs, including our skin.

3. Helps hair and skin

Whilst hot water has the tendency to dry out our hair and skin, whilst opening the pores, on the other hand cold showers help to tighten the pores and prevent them from getting blocked. When the pores get tightened up in our skin and scalp, dirt cannot get in therefore hair and skin remain in a healthy condition. According to Jessica Krant, cold water can make hair to appear stronger, more glossy and shinier because cold tightens up the hair follicles and increases the ability to grip the scalp.

4. Reduces stress

According to the study that has been made in 1994, the results suggested that there was a drastic decrease in uric acid levels during the exposure to cold stimulus. When the body is exposed to cold water, it starts producing an antioxidant gluthathione, which is responsible to keeping all the other antioxidants in check. Hence, having a cold shower regularly, without allowing it to heat up can help to increase the tolerance to stress.

5. Helps to lose weight

A study made in 2009 suggests that when body is exposed to extreme cold temperatures, it activates ones brown fat which is responsible to generate heat and keep our bodies warm. The study argues that one can lose up to nine pounds in a year by just taking cold showers and having brown fat activated frequently. White fat, is another type of fat that accumulates within our bodies when we eat too many calories and we don’t burn these calories for energy and is usually accumulated around the waist, thighs, neck and lower back.

6. Increases energy levels

Cold showers can help to shock our bodies in order to keep them warm. Hence, our bodies start working extra harder, by allowing us to open up our lungs more and take deeper breaths, thus allowing more oxygen intake. Practising this regularly, it will benefit our heart and mental focus too, since it allows our brain to be provided with enough blood and oxygen.

I challenge you to do a #30DayColdShowerChallenge and then tell me in the comment section down below or contact me via social media about your results.

I have been taken cold showers for around 5 months now and every time I get into the shower, I still experience the same stinging and intense feeling, while my entire body becomes stiff and numb. I don’t want to take a warm shower anymore, only because it took me a while to get used to cold showers but I have already experienced the benefits I have explained above.
